Put simply, the FMS is a ranking and grading system that documents movement patterns that are key to normal function. By screening these patterns, the FMS readily identifies functional limitations and asymmetries. These are issues that can reduce the effects of functional training and physical conditioning and distort body awareness.
The FMS generates the Functional Movement Screen Score, which is used to help us target problems and track progress. This scoring system is directly linked to the most beneficial corrective exercises to restore mechanically sound movement patterns. We monitor the FMS score to track progress and to identify those exercises that will be most effective to restore proper movement and build strength in each individual.
The FMS simplifies the concept of movement and its impact on the body. Its streamlined system has benefits for everyone involved – individuals, exercise professionals, and physicians.
Communication - The FMS utilizes simple language, making it easy for individuals, exercise professionals, and physicians to communicate clearly about progress and treatment.
Evaluation - The screen effortlessly identifies asymmetries and limitations, diminishing the need for extensive testing and analysis.
Standardization - The FMS creates a functional baseline to mark progress and provides a means to measure performance.
Safety - The FMS quickly identifies dangerous movement patterns so that they can be addressed. It also indicates an individual’s readiness to perform exercise so that realistic goals can be set and achieved.
Corrective Strategies - The FMS can be applied at any fitness level, simplifying corrective strategies of a wide array of movement issues. It identifies specific exercises based on individual FMS scores to tantly create customized treatment plans.
Light therapy is nothing new however it only recently has been gaining attention in the U.S. The science behind it has been around for nearly 100 years. What is light therapy for pain relief? It is a gentle, non-invasive, drug-free and chemical free alternative that has been shown to reduce, in some cases even eliminate muscle aches and pains. Evidence indicates that cells absorb photons and transform their energy into adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This is the energy that is utilized by cells. As a result it improves the metabolic processes by synthesizing DNA, RNA proteins, enzymes, to name a few, needed to repair or regenerate the cell components and ultimately restore homeostatsis (balance). The absorbed energy helps repair tissue, reduce pain, and reduce circulation. This restores normalcy to the impaired biological process. In addition the penetrating light also activates the production of endorphins and helps block pain-transmitting chemicals. Furthermore ART is used to treat at the tissue level to complete a much faster healing process.
Deep penetrating light at 880nm penetrates to a depth of about 1.18” to 1.57” which makes it effective for pain relief resulted by:

Relaxes and softens injured and overused muscles.
Reduces muscle spasms and cramping.
Increases joint flexibility.
Reduces recovery time for strenuous workouts and eliminates subsequent risk of muscle strain.
Relieves pain for migraine sufferers and decreases the need for medication.
Reduces post-operative adhesions and edema, as well as reduces and realigns scar tissue after healing has occurred.

I came to see Larry because I had a frozen left hip that half a dozen other people had not been able to help me with. My hip hurt when I walked and when I tried to rotate it inward. After just one session with Larry, I was able to walk pain-free. He clearly has both a keen knowledge of how muscles work as well as a gift for reawakening locked, frozen and otherwise shortened muscles with simple but powerful release methods.
I am a triathlete, and I was recently experiencing low back pain, especially after getting off the bike and going into the run. The day before the Florida Ironman Triathlon, I stopped by the ART tent and explained my problem and met Larry Ogilvie. Larry had me run away from him and then back toward him several times. He immediately picked up a mechanical flaw in my gait, took me to his treatment table and began to work on me. It took Larry approximately 15 minutes to achieve what he called balance. He then asked me to do the same run as before. On the first run away and back, I felt no difference. However, on the next run, I felt like a weight had been lifted off my back. My run became effortless. The next day, I ran the fastest Ironman that I have run in years, thanks mostly to Larry. The Active Release Technique should be used in every athlete’s toolbox as a training aid. Thank you again, Larry.
I was fortunate to have learned about and to have made an appointment with Larry Ogilvie, LMT. His weekly shoulder massages using the Active Release Techniques in conjunction with the daily exercises suggested by my physical therapist has visibly increased my shoulder flexibility.
The muscle therapy sessions have also resulted in reducing the pain from osteoarthritis. I certainly wish that my orthopedic MDs had recommended a visit to a licensed massage therapist after I had met with the physical therapist. Had this occurred, I would not have lost shoulder flexibility nor experienced increased pain.
In 2009 I tried to run my first ½ marathon. I did finish, but not without ending up on crutches for over a month. Too often I think people begin fitness programs on a whim without any guidance or structure. This year I decided to become a client of Tifini McGill---a Personal Trainer. Many may think a personal trainer is a “luxury” but it is actually an investment in your health. Tifini keeps the workouts interesting and tailors them to the clients’ needs and goals. With her guidance and encouragement I am now running 7 miles consistently without any pain! I look forward to another ½ marathon in the near future---AND NO CRUTCHES!!!
After suffering for many years with chronic upper back pain and limited motion in my arms, neck and upper back, I started going to Larry to try the Active Release Techniques that I had heard so much about. I had nothing to lose. After years of going to a chiropractor and a massage therapist regularly, I had only experienced temporary relief. It has been only two months and my range of motion has improved 90 percent. I am living without pain, I’m sleeping well and I’m looking forward to total improvement. I wish I had found this technique years ago.
