Active Release Techniques® is a very specific muscle treatment for problems with soft tissue (muscles, ligaments, tendons, fascia and nerves). ART can successfully resolve more than 300 muscle and fascial injuries and more than 100 nerve entrapments.
ART is considered a type of myofascial release. ART can remove scar tissue and adhesions from injured soft tissue, whereas basic massage will not.
The length of an appointment is determined by what issues are being addressed. The initial appointment typically is approximately one hour and most follow up appointments average about 30 minutes.
No one can say for sure how long it will take; however, over the years we have had excellent results using this technique and the time away from work or play is substantially reduced while using ART. Most people find positive results with just one treatment.
Nationally, the price of an ART session averages about $150.00. The cost of one ART session in our office is less and package pricing can be an even better value.
First you have to understand how the muscle was injured and how it feels while going through its range of motion (ROM). Using palpation (touch) skills, the injury to the soft tissue is located. Then using ROM, we can relieve the muscle of the trauma; a type of neuromuscular re-education. The body senses the application of the technique and returns the muscle to its proper state.
This technique began in the athletic community to assist athletes with injuries and performance enhancement. It has just recently begun to move into the mainstream, where health care providers are using it with great success on all soft tissue injuries.
No. We have gone to a reimbursement sheet, where we are paid at time of treatment and the client submits this form with whatever other forms the insurance company needs for reimbursement. Payment is expected when services are rendered. Insurance submissions are the responsibility of the client.
Yes, we currently receive referrals from the local medical community. I often receive referrals from doctors in other areas of the country who know what ART is and what it can do. They use the ART Web site to find providers in other areas. I have used the same Web site to find ART providers for my clients.

I am a triathlete, and I was recently experiencing low back pain, especially after getting off the bike and going into the run. The day before the Florida Ironman Triathlon, I stopped by the ART tent and explained my problem and met Larry Ogilvie. Larry had me run away from him and then back toward him several times. He immediately picked up a mechanical flaw in my gait, took me to his treatment table and began to work on me. It took Larry approximately 15 minutes to achieve what he called balance. He then asked me to do the same run as before. On the first run away and back, I felt no difference. However, on the next run, I felt like a weight had been lifted off my back. My run became effortless. The next day, I ran the fastest Ironman that I have run in years, thanks mostly to Larry. The Active Release Technique should be used in every athlete’s toolbox as a training aid. Thank you again, Larry.
I was fortunate to have learned about and to have made an appointment with Larry Ogilvie, LMT. His weekly shoulder massages using the Active Release Techniques in conjunction with the daily exercises suggested by my physical therapist has visibly increased my shoulder flexibility.
The muscle therapy sessions have also resulted in reducing the pain from osteoarthritis. I certainly wish that my orthopedic MDs had recommended a visit to a licensed massage therapist after I had met with the physical therapist. Had this occurred, I would not have lost shoulder flexibility nor experienced increased pain.
